I used to be ashamed to admit it but there was a time that I REALLY didn't believe it was possible for me. Until I made it happen.  I had been frustrated with my life, struggling financially and wasting my college degree working as a waitress in Beverly Hills.

And then...I got fired.

For serving a difficult customer undercooked oatmeal. As funny as it sounds to me now, the reality was I had so little control over my life, that a bowl of raw oatmeal was all it took to end my career.

I felt humiliated and depressed. I wanted to crawl into a hole. I panicked. I cried. I threw things and called myself a "loser." I just couldn't figure out how I had gotten here. I had a college degree, I was smart. What had happened? I just didn't know what to do and was too ashamed to ask for help because then I'd have to admit that I'd been fired.

After about a month of what felt like pure agony…I had a breakthrough.

There was so much more to this scenario then "getting fired." I realized I had been unhappy for a long time. I was settling in my life. Not doing what I wanted. All of the pain and dissatisfaction I had been experiencing was about the choices I had been making. I didn't have to work at that restaurant if it wasn't making me happy. But, I chose to. It was "comfortable."

But getting fired forced me to step out of my comfort zone and DO something. It was an opportunity for me to finally create the amazing life I had been putting off.
 
I instantly went from feeling sorry for myself to being excited!  I was going to start my own company. My dream had always been to be an entrepreneur and now, I was going to do it!

So…I launched my first business…A Vending Company. 

I had no idea what I was doing.  I didn't even know what a business plan was.  I didn't know how to sell, create a brand, market…I didn't understand administration, how to manage money or taxes. I didn't know anything.

The first 6 months were a nightmare. Zero Accounts – as in NO VENDING MACHINES PLACED IN ANY LOCATIONS. I had no idea what I was doing wrong. I was broke. Then, finally, a manager told me that I could put one of my vending machines in his donut shop –I was flipping out excited!

Then...about 5 hours after placing the machine in my new location, I got a call from the manager. My machine had fallen on top of a child. I didn't mount the stand properly and it fell on a little boy. My life as I knew it was over. I could have killed this little boy. And, as if that wasn't bad enough, I was probably going to be sued and lose the almost non-existent business I had just started.  

It turned out that the child was ok and the parents did not want to sue me. I was really lucky. But, I had to take my machine out of the donut shop. That was one of the scariest and worst moments in my life. That's when I knew I couldn't do it alone.

I had been too stubborn and too proud to ask for help.  But not after that. I called my Dad, his business friends and the small business association.  I took out my credit card and paid for my first self confidence seminar and I hired a coach to help me stay on track and move past obstacles. I couldn't afford it but I did it anyway. I had to stop making mistakes and start making money. I sucked up my pride and asked them all to show me the way. I asked them to teach me about all the things I didn't know. And you know what?  They did.

One year later, I was up, running and making money. I went from 1 vending machine to 300 in one year I learned about branding, marketing, sales, accounting, and customer service. I had no idea what I was doing, made tons of mistakes, but I figured it out.

My biggest epiphany was realizing that I couldn't do it alone. I sought out the best mentors I could find. And I absorbed all they had to offer me...put it to work...and created a business that was far and beyond anything I could have imagined while I was waiting tables!
